Ayurveda is an ancient system of holistic medicine, which began in India more than 8,000 years. One of the basic principles of Ayurveda is that life is meant to be lived in balance and in harmony with nature. The disease occurs when we move away from balance. Ayurveda believes that one has to live in harmony with the seasons, time etc.
The symptoms of depression in the winter are thirst to eat sweets and weight gain. Long nights, short days, sweaters, warm clothing and cold weather made many of us sick and depressed. This depression especially in winter is a Seasonal Affective Disorder and is often referred as winter depression. The exact cause of what depression is still uncertain. But still some scientists think lack of exposure to the sun as the main reason for this disease.
Ritu Sisira starts from mid January and lasts until the middle of the march. Ritu Hemanta begins in mid-November and ends in mid-January. Vata increases in the winter due to cold and drought in the atmosphere outside. People will have more strength and their ability to digest is increased. The response of the body to this season is very well explained in ayurveda. These symptoms are supported by Vata.
The winter time depression is found in Vata prakritti Constitution. Spending time with friends on the beach helps to expose your body to sunlight and keeps high spirit.Body and head oil massage is good. Moderate exercise such as yoga is another remedy for winter depression. Keep the house with lights that helps reduce the intensity of depression. Exposure to sunlight and if the sunlight is not available sitting near a fireplace is the remedy proposed in Ayurveda. Light therapy is recommended by physicians for winter. Exposure to artificial light can cause irritability, Eye strain, headaches, inability to sleep and fatigue. Meditation, massage, light music and laughter contributes to a great extent.
The Ayurvedic tips to help prevent and reduce the intensity of seasonal disorders of winter: Body massage with herbs Vata balancing oil (touch). Then remove the oil by hot water bath. A mixture (This mix prevents washing of the natural oil from the skin) of flour yellow gram (channa), green gram (Kapha), fenu Greek seeds (methi) in equal proportions is the best scrub made from plants that can be used to remove the oil. Use Vata balancing foods such as oil,black gram, wheat, corn and jaggery. Spend your free time with friends and relatives whom you wish, Consume hot soups. Always wear foot wear. Use thick blankets and sheets of cotton, wool and silk. Always use warm water to all daily activities.
